LOS ANGELES, California – Avengers: Endgame has startled movie industry analysts with its rapid-fire success.
In just eleven days since its release, the movie has grossed more than $2 billion in ticket sales.
Moviegoers have swamped theatres to sell out sessions in such countries as Indonesia, Malaysia, the Philippines, Vietnam, Thailand, Egypt, Ethiopia, Oman, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Ukraine, the UAE, Turkey, Mexico, Colombia, and Paraguay.
The blockbuster film from the Walt Disney Co. subsidiary Marvel Studios crossed the $2 billion mark at the global box office on Saturday, becoming the fastest of any movie to reach this threshold.
Avengers: Endgame is now one of just five films ever to earn more than $2 billion globally, joining its predecessor Avengers: Infinity War as the second Marvel Studios film on the list; and, with Star Wars: The Force Awakens, it becomes the third release from The Walt Disney Studios to achieve this milestone.
With an estimated $2.193 billion through Sunday, the film has now moved past Avengers: Infinity War ($2.048 billion), Star Wars: The Force Awakens ($2.068 billion) and even Titanic ($2.187 billion) to become the No. 2 release of all time behind only Avatar ($2.788 billion).
Avengers: Endgame now holds the No. 9 all-time spot domestically, with $621.1 million; and is No. 2 internationally, with $1.572 billion, behind only Avatar ($2.028 billion).
“Records continue to fall overseas. In China, the film’s top international market, Avengers: Endgame has already become the highest grossing non-local film in history with an estimated $576 million (Rmb3.88Bn) to date. It also recently surpassed Avengers: Infinity War and The Jungle Book (2016) to become the highest grossing Hollywood film in India with $52 million to date. Avengers: Endgame is also the highest all-time industry release in Indonesia, Malaysia, Philippines, Vietnam, Thailand, Egypt, Ethiopia, Middle East (as a whole), Oman, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Ukraine, UAE, Turkey, Mexico, Colombia, Central America and Paraguay,” a statement issued by the Walt Disney Co. on Monday said.
The Walt Disney Co. is enjoying a wave of success since completing its acquisition of Rupert Murdoch’s 20th Century Fox in a $71.3 billion stock and cash deal on 20 March this year. As the Murdoch family now has a large slice of Disney, the Murdochs too will be reaping the rewards of the Avengers success.
